Train Transfers To and From Alicante Airport

Alicante Airport (ALC) is one of the main gateways to the Region of Murcia, in Spain. This is a beautiful area along the Mediterranean coast, or Costa Blanca, which is very popular for tourism. The airport is only 9 km, or 5.6 miles from Alicante, and 10 km, or 6.2 miles from Elche, and ranked as the fifth busiest airport in Spain. Over ten million passengers pass through the airport each year. Similar to all other large airports in Spain, Alicante has many transportation options for its passengers. However, there is, at present, no train station on the airport grounds. This does not pose any problems for travelers, as there are many bus services which offer continuous transportation to all the main railway stations in Alicante.

Passengers who wish to continue their journey by train after arriving at Alicante Airport can easily find a bus that will take them to one of the two main train stations in Alicante, from where any destination can be reached by railway transportation. The bus stops at the airport are all just outside the arrivals area. Simply exit the airport and cross the street, and you will notice the main bus stops just to your left. From Bus stop No. 30, passengers are able to catch the Airport to Alicante City bus line, or Line C-6. This bus travels to the Alicante Central Train Station and to Plaza Puerta del Mar. The Line C-6 bus is available approximately every 20 minutes from outside Alicante Airport, and the journey time to these train stations is around 45 minutes. The buses are air conditioned, with friendly drivers who will be able to help you, however, it is useful to know a few words in Spanish, as the drivers don't usually speak English. If you are traveling to the Central Railway Station ask the driver for Estacion de trenes, and he will let you know where to get off the bus.

The Alicante Terminal, or the central railway station of Alicante, is located directly in the center of the city, facing the Salamanca Avenue. The train station is operated by RENFE, which is the state owned Railway Company, and offers frequent connections to all major Spanish cities, for example, Madrid, Seville and Barcelona. Different long-distance trains travel to various areas in Spain. The Euromed and Alaris travel to Barcelona-Sants, the Alvia travels to Madrid-Chamartin, Gijón-Cercanías and Santander, while the Talgo also runs to Barcelona-Sants, Murcia del Carmen and Cartagena. The Talgo Mare Nostrum runs to Montpellier Saint-Roch and Lorca-Sutullena, and the Altaria-Talgo travels to La Coruña-San Cristóbal and Pontevedra. These trains also have many stops along the way. Local trains will allow you to reach the nearer towns of Elche, Orihuela and Murcia. The journey to Elche is around half an hour, while to Murcia is approximately an hour and a half. It is also planned to implement a high-speed train connection between Madrid – Valencia and Alicante train station. This will cut the traveling time to Madrid by an hour and a half.

Once arriving at the Central Train Station, you will find the ticket and information office to the left, towards the main door. Take note to never leave your baggage unattended. Do not even leave it on the floor whilst buying tickets, asking for information, looking in the other direction etc. Always keep a careful eye on your belongings. The Central Train Station in Alicante is a non-smoking area. If you need to catch a taxi from the train station, instead of exiting through the main doors, leave the station through the small door on the right hand side. Here you will quickly find a taxi before the other passengers, as outside the main doors is the busy Salamanca Avenue which can be rather stressful.

The second railway station in Alicante is the called the Narrow Gauge Railway Station. This station is not operated by RENFE, but by the FGV, or Ferrocarils de la Generalitat Valenciana. This is the station to use when traveling to other cities along the Costa Blanca, for example, Benidorm, Denia, Altea and Villajoyosa. In order to reach the station from the airport, take the Line C-6 bus from Bus stop No. 30, and travel to Plaza Puerta del Mar. This is the beautiful harbor area of Alicante, at the end of the central Postiguet beach, and nearby the Hotel Melia.

The Alicante Streetcar railway network is also accessible from this area. The TRAM in Alicante is an excellent way to travel to the beach of San Juan and to the northern suburbs of El Campello.

Travelling by bus, train or tram is most often a cost effective transport solution for many passengers, as taxis, rented cars and private transfers are rather more expensive. Alicante is well connected by train and tram to all destinations, and from the airport, passengers will easily be able to explore this magnificent area.
